  1.      In 1824, John Quincy began his bid for the presidency in a bitterly fought campaign against Andrew Jackson. The following year at the age of 57, John Quincy became the sixth president of the United States. In a four-way race, no candidate won a majority of electoral votes, and the House of Representatives elected Adams.
